The Best Dumplings in Montreal
Dumplings: small, comforting delights that are inexpensive, delicious, and always satisfying. Although they are often associated with Chinese culture, there is in fact a vast range of dumplings found around the world, each shaped by its own regional traditions.
Generally speaking, the basic idea of a dumpling goes as follows: a small piece of dough filled with a mixture—often meat, spices, and vegetables. Many culinary cultures have created their own versions! Depending on local resources, the dough may be made from cereal flours (rice, wheat, barley, etc.) or from potatoes. In Poland, you’ll find excellent pierogis, boiled or pan-fried, known for their potato-based dough and fillings that can include meat, cheese, and cabbage, among others. In Tibet, there are momos, a version similar to Chinese dumplings, often served as a meal with a delicious tomato- and chili-based sauce. At Tastet, we’re particularly fond of xiao long bao—more commonly known as “soup dumplings”—filled with meat and a rich, savoury broth.
Every variation of dumplings is tempting! For this list, however, we’ve limited our selection to Asian dumplings, as Montréal is home to countless places where you can enjoy them, and they are the best-known to most people.

Le Petit Coin Dumpling
Small, unpretentious restaurant on the Plateau Mont-Royal, where you can eat delicious dumplings. The two women behind this project arrived in Montreal as students. A few years later, they opened this little hidden gem as well as a Nouilles de riz Yunnan, a restaurant in Brossard. The dumplings are available to eat in or take out.

La Maison de Mademoiselle Dumpling
La Maison de Mademoiselle Dumpling is such a tiny little restaurant that opened on Plaza St Hubert Plaza in 2015. The décor may be unassuming, but the dumplings are absolutely delicious! You can even see two women in the window carefully preparing them by hand. Every recipe at La Maison de Mademoiselle Dumpling comes from the owner’s mother. On the menu, you’ll find pork and bok choy; chicken and cilantro; beef and cilantro; vegetarian options with cabbage, Chinese mushrooms, carrots, and bean noodles; or shiitake, tofu, carrot, cabbage, and ginger; and pork, shrimp, and ginger — all priced between $10.45 and $14.15. People often order the dumplings to go for house parties, and they’re a hit every single time!Photo by Alison Slattery.

Mai Xiang Yuan Dumpling Chinatown
With one location in Chinatown and another on Sainte-Catherine Street, Mai Xiang Yuan is a must when it comes to dumplings. The reason is simple: the space has plenty of charm, the staff is efficient, and the dumplings are delicious. You’ll find plates of about fifteen dumplings; here, we prefer them boiled. We have a soft spot for the beef, onion, and curry dumplings, as well as the pork, shrimp, and cilantro ones.Photo by Alison Slattery.

Harbin Dumpling
Harbin serves excellent dumplings — boiled, steamed, or fried — at very reasonable prices. The place has become a classic. Harbin is the best dumpling restaurant in the Mile End — and the only one, too! You’ll find pork, chicken, beef, lamb, vegetarian, or shrimp options. We especially love the pork, cilantro, and shrimp dumplings, as well as the pork and chive ones. The portions are generous and the dumplings full of flavour. Skip the soups — they don’t do the place justice. Open every day, and they take takeout orders.

Sammi & Soupe Dumpling - (Ste-Catherine St. O)
Sammi & Soupe Dumpling offers a variety of delicious dumplings. Here too, you can watch these little delights being made through a kitchen window. The dumplings are “xiao long bao” — meaning steamed, and literally translated from Wikipedia as “little steamed bun.” They come in sets of ten or fifteen and are all very flavourful. Several varieties are available once again. Be warned: the service is definitely not the best! Open every day. Photo Sammi Soup & Dumpling.

Montreal Chinese Crepes & Dumplings
Montreal Chinese Crepes and Dumplings is a small establishment in Montreal West that offers delicious dumplings and very tasty Chinese crepes. This tiny address is one where you can eat small miracles at very low prices! We love their shrimp dumplings, the veggie dumplings and the sweet and spicy beef dumpling punch. The experience is completed by the kindness of the staff and the way you feel welcomed. A (very) surprising little address to discover! Photos Alison Slattery

Ai Dumpling
Ai Dumplings is modestly tucked away on Somerled Avenue in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, and behind this unassuming façade lies a generous little spot with a lot to offer. On the menu, after two delicious soups and a few salads, you’ll find a long list of dumplings: beef, chicken, lamb, pork, seafood, and even some vegan options. Once you’ve made your choice, you’ll be asked whether you’d like them “simply steamed” or “fried.” In either case, you’ll be glad you stopped by.
