In Rome, al taglio pizza is eaten standing up, between two street corners, folded into a piece of paper. That is exactly what Fernando Menichelli had in mind when he opened Taglio di Roma in 2015, in Duvernay. More than a decade later, the Boulevard D’Auteuil address remains one of the few in Greater Montreal to treat the slice the way Romans do.

Born in Italy and brought here young, Fernando wanted to bring back the rhythm of his city. “Over there, people walk, they grab a slice, they enjoy it, they go see things,” sums up his son Angelo, who joined the family business at 15. “I want to help him and continue the legacy he built.”

The secret at Taglio di Roma lies in the dough, fermented for 72 hours. That’s what gives it the open, airy crumb, and the lightness the family claims for it. “You can eat two or three slices and not feel heavy,” Angelo says. The recipe never leaves the family circle: “When my father or I make it, we don’t show it to anyone, nobody is next to us.” And the conclusion lands without detour: “If the dough isn’t good, nothing works.” A well-kept secret worth its weight in gold, and one that makes you want to come back often for their famous pizza.

The rest follows the same logic. The potatoes and vegetables are cut every morning; the sausage, the mortadella and the salami are made to the family’s own recipes by a supplier who delivers daily; the porchetta comes from outside. Everything is fresh and made in keeping with Roman tradition.

The menu reads like a Roman one: bianca with garlic and rosemary, patata with potato and rosemary, siciliana with rapini and sausage (our favourite!), calabrese with spicy salami, parma with prosciutto and Grana Padano, and the house signature with porcini, truffle cream and mozzarella. They have a very large selection of pizzas! Around them orbit suppli, arancini, polpette, house-made lasagna, mortadella focaccia and cannoli. Everything is very affordable, which makes Taglio di Roma a strong option for an affordable lunch in Laval. The address has several seats for those who want to eat in, but it’s above all a place you stop into to order takeout.

Laval was no accident: Montreal already had plenty of pizzerias, and the family wanted to stand out elsewhere. And since 2015, the address has continued to be one of the best pizzerias around. Every summer, the shop closes while the family heads back to Rome to taste the competition and keep improving their work. Taglio di Roma is an authentic Roman address worth the detour. Auguri!
