Mitch Deli is back with version 3.0. The beloved spot on Beaubien Street got a makeover in winter 2026 and returns with a new energy — more mature and self-assured, yet still driven by that same intention of being the neighbourhood restaurant focused on sharing and accessibility that built its reputation.
For Maxime Gagné, owner of the establishment and an esteemed teacher who has guided the careers of more than 2,000 cooks and chefs, this new iteration marks a pivotal moment in the restaurant’s story. Launched in 2020 from the window of the record shop Le 180g before settling on Beaubien Street in 2022, the restaurant has since come into its own, carried by what has driven it from the start: convivial cuisine, a sense of closeness, and a genuine desire to build community around the table. This new chapter is embodied notably by the arrival of Miguel Chew, who joins the team as head chef.
Maxime describes him as “someone honest, pleasant, who cooks with precision, and with whom I share a similar vision of the restaurant industry.” Their connection goes back about fifteen years, to the days when Miguel was just starting out in the kitchen. His path then took him to Europe, including stints at major Michelin-starred establishments, before his return to Quebec, where he held the position of head chef at Hoogan & Beaufort, among others. It was ultimately through collaborations on a few pop-ups that the idea of joining the new version of Mitch Deli came about naturally. His arrival aligns with Maxime’s desire to build a committed team, one that will take on an increasingly larger role in the evolution of the restaurant.
Who is Mitch Deli for?
Mitch Deli is, first and foremost, a place where locals can drop in for a drink or just a side of fries, settle in for the evening, and share the entire menu. An address that appeals to young and old alike, a hangout where you find yourself coming back several times a week and where each visit holds its little surprises without ever blowing the budget. The restaurant is also featured on our list of beaux, bons, pas chers (beautiful, good, affordable): the food is a pleasure, the carefully chosen products are a discovery, and the bill remains genuinely reasonable. A deliberate choice, at the heart of the restaurant’s identity.
You’ll savour relaxed market cuisine that never lacks personality. The menu is divided into three sections — snacks, mains, and desserts — with offerings that evolve based on what arrives from the small farms the team works with, and on the creative mood in the kitchen. Best not to get too attached to any one dish: the BBQ oyster mushroom with crispy chicken skin and a confit egg, or the pappardelle with carrot juice and chicken jus, may well be reimagined the next day. The team also stays open to improvisation and won’t hesitate, for example, to transform a dish to make it vegetarian based on the table’s preferences.
The famous fried chicken sandwich, one of the best in Montreal, remains the only classic set in stone, leaving plenty of room for movement. “Of course, the tomato sandwich and the oysters will return with the seasons. But I now trust my team’s instincts, the people who bring this place to life. My job is no longer to impose my choices, but to let theirs flourish, and to support them in that,” confides Maxime.
The wine list, one of the great strengths of the restaurant, is rather impressive with nearly 200 references for a 40-seat establishment. Private imports, several Quebec cuvées, plenty of natural wines: the selection is both generous and thoughtfully curated by sommelier and manager Tracy Baudry. The address also serves as a neighbourhood wine shop, letting you head home with a few bottles to stock the cellar or pair with a picnic in the park, with a nice 20% discount that’s always a welcome perk.
On the beverage side, you’ll also find beers from Messorem, a proud collaborator, as well as Grand-Bois and several other local suppliers. Classic cocktails are punctuated with spontaneous inspirations. No Pepsi or Coke here: the focus is on niche small-batch producers like Zamalek, or Bellwoods on the non-alcoholic side. Coherent choices, in harmony with the values of the house, always guided by a desire to limit its ecological footprint as much as possible.
A bright and resolutely playful space
The decor was entirely reimagined by Nicola Tardif-Bourdages, founder of Taktik Design, a longtime friend and Mitch Deli regular. Working alongside Maxime, he created a brighter, more open space, with a kitchen redesigned to maximize ergonomics and better support the pace of service. The blond wood envelope, the terrazzo tiling, and the playful, at times almost childlike touches with their figurines, keep the eclectic spirit of the place alive and give the restaurant all of its charm. Once the warm weather arrives, the terrace will double the establishment’s capacity and bring a lovely dose of life to Beaubien Street.
In the kitchen, in the dining room, and right down to the glass, you can feel this new energy everywhere and the desire to evolve the restaurant without losing what makes it special. In this 3.0 version, Mitch Deli remains as warm and welcoming as ever, with that rare feeling of sitting down at the table of an old friend. A fine chapter ahead for the years to come, and confirmation that Mitch Deli is still one of the best addresses in Rosemont–Petite-Patrie.
