Tuck Shop restaurant is a must-visit in the city and one of our favorite tables, ever since it opened in 2010. To kick off 2019 on the right foot, the address got a stunning makeover. With a flamboyant comeback, the dynamic and motivated team offers a culinary experience just as excellent as before — and, in fact, even better!
At the helm is the powerhouse trio of Amelia Stine, John Bloom, and Chef Theo Lerikos, now joined by John Metcalfe. Together, they have succeeded in turning this address into an institution in Saint-Henri. While Tuck Shop was initially considered one of the favorite spots among the city’s anglophone community, the restaurant quickly welcomed just as many francophones as anglophones. Over the years, the address has grown in popularity and evolved in harmony with the neighborhood.
What makes a restaurant a truly great table despite the small size of its space (38 seats)? A combination of things: the quality of the cuisine and the wine list, the ambiance, the décor, and the service. Here, you will find all of that.
Designed by Agence Rhoncus, the décor is simply stunning! You rediscover a space that strikes the perfect balance between chic and modern, where green tones predominate as a nod to the farm-to-table concept. A personal favorite addition from the house: the oyster bar, where, thanks to the magnificent new open kitchen, guests can sit and watch the cooks practice their craft.
Chef Théo Lerikos maintains the same structure as before, with a comforting bistro menu that never ceases to leave us speechless. The menu is concise and finely crafted, with dishes prepared with an impressive balance of textures and flavors. It features nine starters or preliminary bites, half a dozen main courses, a Quebec cheese plate, and two or three desserts. Since the menu changes constantly, we cannot make specific recommendations — but know that we have never had a dish here that wasn’t appreciated by the whole table.
You will always find a market salad, fresh pasta (among the best in Montreal), two meats, and two fish dishes, all wonderfully prepared. The restaurant also serves an excellent tartare, earning it a top spot on our list of the best tartares in Montreal. The portions are generous and the dishes comforting. The emphasis is placed on market products — think Kamouraska lamb, products from the Gaspésie region, and of course Quebec’s famed wild mushrooms. Here, the goal is not to transform ingredients but to magnify them, which opens the door to all kinds of vegetarian options. Gourmet simplicity takes center stage — a cuisine best described as “refined comfort.” A welcome addition compared to previous years: delicious seafood in the spotlight thanks to the beautiful new raw bar.
Jonathan Metcalfe handles the cocktail menu, offering three to five simple, well-crafted options that pair beautifully with the seasonal menu. Co-owner Amelia takes care of the wine list, composed primarily of private imports and updated daily.
Service at Tuck Shop is one of the aspects that makes the establishment so enjoyable. Guests are treated royally, with every member of the floor staff ensuring their work is carried out impeccably.
What we love most about Tuck Shop — and what makes it an essential restaurant — is the balance between all its various aspects: cuisine, décor, service, and atmosphere, all coming together in perfect harmony. This address is also featured in our guide to Montreal’s most beautiful terraces.
