Café Dei Campi is a charming address with an Italian flair where every delight is entirely plant-based — a well-kept secret on Chabot Street in Rosemont.

Opened in December 2015 by barista Nicola Vardaro (Dépanneur Le Pick Up, Caffè San Simeon) and pastry chef Isabelle Deschamps (H4C, Toqué!), Café Dei Campi is a small neighbourhood spot that acts as a bakery, counter and pâtisserie (!!). Here, everything is crafted using plant-based ingredients.
“We deliberately stay away from the vegan label,” says Isabelle. “We simply make good things that just happen to be vegan!” The name Dei Campi — the Italian version of Deschamps — also echoes the natural, plant-based essence of the products used.

Set in the former space of a catering service, the café benefited from a professional kitchen from day one. The décor today evokes a traditional Italian pastry shop/café, with an open kitchen and around 18 seats.

The menu, entirely designed by Isabelle, offers both savoury options and exquisite pastries. Originally inspired by Nicola’s family recipes, they were later adapted into plant-based versions.
“The goal is that people who aren’t vegan don’t even notice the absence of eggs in their cookie or dairy in their muffin.”
Among the musts: chocolate chip cookies, olive oil brioche, pizzas and sourdough breads. The fillings of the turnovers change with the seasons, as do the weekly specials. There are also focaccias, soup of the day, sandwiches, calzones and many more options.

The coffee is sourced from Antica Caffetteria Torrificazione, renowned for its excellent Italian roast, and drinks are served exclusively with plant-based milks. During the holidays, you can even enjoy one of the best panettones in town!

Café Dei Campi is also one of the neighbourhood’s eco-friendly gems. Whenever possible, it uses local and organic ingredients, prepares homemade preserves from Québec’s summer harvests, composts, and favours packaging that is 99% compostable and recyclable.

“We have exceptional customers, and it’s a real pleasure to cook for them, especially in a neighbourhood that’s evolving,” says Isabelle. With the arrival of new addresses in Rosemont, she and Nicola look to the future with enthusiasm!

As for us, we never tire of the house pastries or of their way of making vegan cuisine accessible to everyone! And on top of that, the owners couldn’t be more delightful. A beautiful address worth discovering!
