Five months ago, Matt and Jess opened the doors of Mmmm in Little Burgundy, on Payette Street. This isn’t their first café project. Back when they lived in British Columbia, their home province, Matt and Jess started a small specialty coffee shop… in a food truck! Merci Foodtruck was their very first entrepreneurial adventure, and that’s where they fell in love with coffee.

They later lived in France, in Bordeaux, where they became enamored with the culture and the language. But feeling a bit nostalgic for their homeland, they decided to return to North America and settle in Montreal—a perfect blend of their roots and the French touch they cherish.

You’ve probably heard about their famous cardamom knots. They actually come from one of our favorite bakeries in Montreal: Miette. We’re also crazy about the “raspberry kisses” from Carlota Bakery! When it comes to food, those are the only two options. At Mmmm, people mostly come to enjoy a drink and have a great chat with the owners or friends.

And the drinks here are truly delicious! You’ll find an excellent quality espresso—bold, tight, with a silky crema. Mmmm also masters the art of matcha: you can have it sparkling, for those who like something refreshing, or with a delicious vanilla foam for a sweeter touch. The café also offers a lovely variety of teas.

The decor, blending shades of blue with lots of wood, was entirely designed and crafted by Matt and Jess. A beautiful balance of modernity and warmth, just like the atmosphere that fills the space.

And why the word magasin in the name of this charming coffee shop? Simply because you can also shop there. Jess wants to shine a light on mindful and intentional purchases. She offers artisan products from all over the world—unique finds, like handwoven straw jewelry from Poland.
“I want people to buy the artist and their story, not just their art,” she explains.

Outside of the café’s opening hours, Jess also runs a coaching business, helping people bring their dreams to life, just like she did. Her greatest passion? Helping others become the best version of themselves. Matt’s dream, on the other hand, was to open his own café. With Mmmm, the two of them are able to live out their passions and create human connections.

The Southwest is truly lucky to have this lovely café!
