SUPERNAT—Vietnamese station, opened in 2022, is entering a new chapter. A café by day, restaurant and wine bar by night, this address on Sainte-Catherine Street in the eastern end of Hochelaga puts Vietnamese-inspired cooking—rooted in family history—more front and center than ever. The vibe evolves with the day: a place to work, brunch, drink, eat, dance, and stretch the evening late.

A family story at the heart of the plate

At the core of SUPERNAT’s identity is “Maman Vũ, Paul’s mother”—the soul of the house. From the very beginning, she has passed down her recipes without notebooks, staying true to tradition through gestures, aromas, creativity, and instinct. Paul and Olivier also carry the place with their shared passion for coffee and wine, shaping a welcoming address where traditions and discoveries meet.

Café, wine bar, ’90s vibes, and smart small bites

By day, SUPERNAT wakes up Hochelaga with a ’90s hip-hop and R&B soundtrack and carefully crafted coffees anchored in Southeast Asian cultures: ube latte, pandan latte, and of course the famous Cà Phê Trứng—a rich, aromatic Vietnamese egg coffee. Add to that a playful lineup of sandwiches, accented with Vietnamese-inspired sides. Café manager Myranda Arseneault also highlights the dynamic Vietnamese coffee scene, in a space where creativity, culture, and community intersect.

Longtime friends and business partners, Paul Tran and Olivier Trudeau wanted SUPERNAT to be accessible to everyone in the neighborhood, with special care for young families. Olivier even insisted on installing a changing table in the washrooms. Strollers and little ones are welcome here—just like dogs on the beautiful terrace. SUPERNAT is also one of our favorite cafés to visit with kids.

As evening falls, SUPERNAT shifts gears, offering table service and a Vietnamese cuisine unlike any other in Montreal: reimagined dishes inspired by family traditions, including vegan options and a culinary approach that reflects both Vietnamese flavors and the city’s modern sensibility. Standouts include papaya salad, Lạp Xưởng fried rice, and chicken wings glazed with caramelized nước mắm. The experience continues with a wine list curated by Jonathan Brisebois (Montréal Plaza, Pastel)—an intentional, elegant selection that respects nature and the work of artisan winemakers, making SUPERNAT one of our go-to spots for natural wine in Montreal. Service strikes the perfect balance: professional, relaxed, warm, attentive, and deeply human.

“We want people to feel good, to taste the dishes, share them, and come back. SUPERNAT is a place to chill, dance, and eat well.” — Paul Tran

Colorful wabi-sabi aesthetic

Ménard Dworkind designed SUPERNAT’s colorful interior. The look draws from wabi-sabi aesthetics—simple and imperfect—with a stripped-back wall and an abandoned bathtub bearing witness to the space’s past lives. A large glass door opens onto the terrace overlooking the Morgan Park fountain.

A cultural and community hub

SUPERNAT aims to be a living space: every month, it highlights artists and programming that blends Québec culture, Montreal’s diversity, and nods to Vietnam. Exhibitions, themed events, parties spotlighting the street-dance scene, Asian Horror Drag nights, and participation in Chợ Đêm, echoing the energy of Vietnamese night markets… SUPERNAT seeks to shine a light on Vietnamese heritage while uplifting the local emerging scene, creating a vibrant bridge between tradition and modernity.

We love SUPERNAT because it proudly carries its Vietnamese heritage while being deeply rooted in the neighborhood—where culture, food, wine, and coffee come together naturally, without artifice.
