Mauro Cruz and his wife, Jessica Rubi, hail from Oaxaca, Mexico. After nearly 20 years working in the restaurant industry across Mexico, the United States, and Canada, Mauro settled in Montreal and opened Mexico Restaurant with Jessica.
The restaurant, which first opened in 2016, relocated two years ago to Jean-Talon Street to accommodate a larger clientele. Interestingly, the current space—near Iberville station—was once home to another Mexican restaurant, a serendipitous nod that brings a smile to Mauro’s face.
A Welcoming Space
Friendliness lies at the heart of Mexico Restaurant. Everyone is welcome here. While members of the Latin American community have long been regulars, the quality of the food, generous portions, and unbeatable prices are becoming less of a secret, much to the owners’ delight.
“It’s an incredible blessing to have so many people in our restaurant! We’ve worked hard and been patient, and now we’re seeing the results—it’s so rewarding,” Mauro shared during our interview.
This isn’t a place for elaborate decor but for what’s on the plate: hearty portions of traditional Mexican dishes with bold flavors. The menu features all the Mexican classics—tacos, quesadillas, tortas, and marubirria soup. However, the standout is the birria tacos (stuffed with meat and cheese and dipped into the flavorful cooking broth). Their tacos are always generously filled, and the meats are perfectly cooked. As a starter, the fried tortillas with guacamole are a surefire choice.
Accessibility Above All
Mauro explained that he focuses on serving large portions while keeping prices as low as possible. Mission accomplished—diners can feast like royalty for about $15 per person! Note that the restaurant doesn’t have a liquor license. Instead, guests enjoy Jarritos, horchata (cinnamon or strawberry), or fresh fruit juices. The ambiance is authentically Central American, transporting visitors the moment they step inside.
Diners can enjoy their meals on-site, with seating for around 70, or opt for takeout. Delivery isn’t available: “I like the idea of people coming to pick up their food—it adds a human touch,” Mauro said. Interestingly, you can order taco meat by the kilo, complete with tortillas, sauces, limes, and other condiments for a turnkey feast at home.
Building Community
Mauro is brimming with ideas, always focused on bringing the neighborhood together and introducing Mexican culture to a wider audience. Stay tuned for their upcoming projects!
In Summary
Mexico Restaurant is beloved for its flavorful, affordable dishes that transport diners to Mexico. Bonus points for the vibrant musical ambiance that accompanies every visit.
