Tucked away in a modest Westmount shopping center lies a true institution: Sushi Bar Kim. Since opening in 2004, this sushi counter has grown alongside its community, becoming over the years a beloved gathering place for neighborhood regulars.

Originally, Sushi Bar Kim was just a small takeout counter. But the quality of its ingredients and the consistency of its craft quickly attracted a loyal clientele. Success allowed the addition of the cozy dining room we know today—without ever losing the simple, welcoming atmosphere of its early days.

A Family Story

Founded by Gina’s parents, Sushi Bar Kim has always been a family affair. More than twenty years later, her mother still works behind the counter, preparing dishes with the same dedication, while Gina and her brother now lead the service and daily operations. The warm, inviting spirit left by their late father continues to define the restaurant.

“Our customers have watched us grow, just as we’ve watched their children grow,” Gina shares. That sense of connection is felt in the welcome: here, you’re not just a customer—you quickly become a familiar face.

A Menu Rooted in the Essentials

While the menu has expanded over time, it has never lost sight of its roots. Sushi is always made to order, the rice carefully seasoned, and freshness remains the top priority. Classics like nigiri, sashimi, and maki have been executed with the same rigor since 2004, proving that quality never fades.

But there is much more to discover. Starters set the tone gently with comforting miso soup or the more delicate sumashi, with shrimp, salmon, and seaweed. Crisp salads—whether the seaweed version with radish and cucumber or the colorful sashimi salad with salmon and tuna—bring refreshing balance. For a heartier meal, poke bowls and noodle soups are favorites, with the seafood ramen being especially irresistible.

Grilled dishes and teriyaki showcase another side of the kitchen’s skill: silky teriyaki salmon steak, perfectly seared tuna, and buttery miso black cod all melt in the mouth. Even tofu, steamed or fried, is treated with care, proving that attention to flavor and texture is constant across the menu.

When it comes to sushi, variety and quality truly impress. Simple hosomaki—avocado, spicy salmon, cucumber—deliver straightforward flavors, while special rolls lean more indulgent: spicy hamachi, crispy salmon, or crunchy tuna with tempura flakes and spicy mayo bring bold intensity. Signature creations shine with creativity: the Ocean Roll with lobster, avocado, and caviar, the soft-shell crab Spider Roll, or the lighter Kyoto Roll wrapped in cucumber are standouts. Gunkan topped with roe, lobster, or salmon add a festive final flourish.

Whether dining solo, sharing a simple meal with friends, or bringing home takeout for two, Sushi Bar Kim quickly earns its place as one of the city’s most cherished sushi destinations.
