Opened in January 2024 on Promenade Ontario in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Octo offers a reinvented and particularly entertaining dim sum experience.
Behind this project is a dynamic team composed of Pascal Bolduc (Pied de Cochon, Chien Fumant) and David Hibon (Alma, Chien Fumant). “Octo refers to the number eight, a symbol of luck and prosperity in Chinese culture. It also evokes the octopus, an animal known for its adaptability and desire to explore the world,” explains Pascal.
The decor, designed by the Blazys Gerard studio (also behind Dandy in Old Montreal), features a modern and slightly industrial ambiance. A huge mural depicting an octopus dominates one of the walls, while the others showcase dark tones. The tables are well-lit, and part of the restaurant is bathed in a purple glow from the neon sign. The 44 seats, offering comfort for both couples and groups, do not require reservations (walk-in only!).
The attentive staff is there to guide you in choosing drinks and dishes, based on your preferences.
Reinvented Dim Sum
In the kitchen, chef-owner David Hibon has crafted a menu of small plates to share, offering a refined take on Asian street food. Prices range from $4 to $23, which is very attractive considering the quality of the dishes. Octo also appears on our list of festive and affordable restaurants in Montreal. Among the must-try dishes: duck spring rolls with passion fruit sauce, the shrimp wonton served with Tom Yum broth, and the all-dressed hot dog, made with white pudding, bao dough, sesame mustard, pickled cabbage, and relish jelly. The desserts, such as the miso cheesecake, are also worth a try.
As for cocktails, the minimalist menu highlights house creations with Asian ingredients, such as the Vesper with sake and pandan. Classic cocktails are also available upon request. The wine list, ranging from natural to more classic wines, offers options perfectly paired with the flavors of the dishes, with prices from $61 to $120.
Octo is a great newcomer to the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighborhood if you’re looking for original and delicious dishes at very affordable prices. Don’t miss out on this unique culinary experience!
Enjoy!
