Le Péché Matinal on Saint-Charles Street in Longueuil is without a doubt the breakfast–brunch mecca on the South Shore! Open since 2012, the restaurant has gradually earned its place among the must-visit morning spots. Whether you’re a fan of runny eggs, pillowy French toast, or generously topped toasts, the address has, over the years, built a loyal following—so much so that it was named one of Mayor Catherine Fournier’s personal favourites.
Preserving the spirit of Le Péché Matinal
After more than ten years at the helm of the restaurant, Brigitte Gagné decided in 2023 to pass the torch and put Le Péché Matinal up for sale, marking an important turning point for the establishment. Olivier Barbeau, who had been working there since 2020, immediately recognized a rare opportunity. Deeply attached to the place, he also knew that a breakfast restaurant requires constant presence and strong support, so he teamed up with Domenico Antonacci and Paul Camirand (formerly of Bistro des bières belges).
Together, the trio brings close to 45 years of experience in the restaurant industry, both in the kitchen and on the floor. They saw the chance to invest in a project that already enjoyed an excellent reputation and a well-established clientele. Three passionate individuals who hadn’t necessarily imagined a career in restaurants—Olivier’s master’s degree in taxation has, in fact, helped ensure tight financial management, a valuable asset in this new chapter.
The transition was handled with great care: Brigitte remained involved for nearly two years to support the changeover and make sure the soul of the restaurant was preserved.
“She’s still invited to the Christmas party this year,” Paul tells us— a small detail that speaks volumes about the bonds formed over the years.
Reimagined classics
Honestly, we could list the entire menu and you wouldn’t be disappointed. The cuisine here is generous, comforting, and above all, indulgent. This is a far cry from the standard eggs-bacon-white toast trio. Among the house specialties are a brioche bread with apples, raisins, and cinnamon, gratinéed with cheddar and bacon, served on a Coureur des Bois apple compote, as well as a grilled cheese with braised ham, caramelized onions, Oka cheese, and cheddar—two true menu staples.
Omelettes are also among the signatures. “No browning on my omelettes—ever!” Olivier insists. The butternut squash velouté with orange-whipped mascarpone is another untouchable classic. Served with house-made muesli, this creation outshines any yogurt bowl you’ve ever had.
“It was important for us to keep the house classics, while gradually evolving them with our own creative touch. We’re often told that no dish has ever been removed from the menu. We test new ideas on the chalkboard, and the most popular ones naturally make their way onto the menu.” That’s how additions like the croque-madame, the jalapeño breakfast sandwich, and other chalkboard creations earned a permanent spot. The restaurant stands out for both the variety and originality of its dishes.
On the drinks side, there’s a small but thoughtful selection of wines, beers, and cocktails—naturally including mimosas and espresso martinis. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, mimosas are just $5 (!!), a deal we’re told is here to stay.
No reservations here: it’s first come, first served, in a relaxed atmosphere with service that’s an integral part of the experience.
The restaurant offers close to 90 seats, including a small terrace in the summer. Out back, a glassed-in veranda—without a doubt one of the most charming corners of the space—features artwork and brings a beautiful energy to the room.
If Le Péché Matinal isn’t already part of your routine, this is your sign to discover it. A warm, welcoming address you’ll return to for its consistency, indulgence, creativity, and the unmistakable charm of its team.
