Since it opened in 2014, Bistro Amerigo has become part of the fabric of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. The restaurant was born out of a deep love for traditional Italian family cooking. Today, the restaurant, proudly named after owner Steve Marcone’s father and son, has carved out a special niche in the hearts of the neighbourhood’s residents.

What makes Bistro Amerigo so unique is more than just (delicious) food. It’s a place that brings people together. Here, everyone is warmly welcomed, whether for lunch, a romantic dinner, or a family evening. Many employees have been there since the beginning, including manager Mike Lamenta. “We’re really like a family. There are several staff members I’ve practically seen grow up. My daughter Naira and my niece also work with us,” Steve notes—and this family spirit is reflected in the service. The restaurant doesn’t take reservations, but the waiting system is simple: guests sign up on a list and receive a call when their table is ready.

On the menu, led by chef Alex DiPrima, classic Italian dishes are the stars. The homemade meatballs, still lovingly prepared by Steve’s father, are a must-try, as are the fried calamari, which many consider the best in the city. The cavatelli with sausage and rapini is another favourite. The wine list features private importations, mainly from Rome and Sicily. And for cocktail lovers, the (very!) generous negronis are a surefire choice.

The decor evokes a charming classic Italian bistro with a New York touch. The walls are adorned with family photos and references to The Sopranos and Rocky, adding warmth to the space.

For Steve, Amerigo’s greatest achievement lies in the sense of belonging it gives to its customers. “It’s not just a meal, it’s a shared experience at the table, a moment to enjoy together,” he proudly says. This philosophy makes Amerigo much more than just a restaurant—it’s a place where memories are made, and the community comes together.

Unfortunately, this restaurant isn’t very accessible for people in wheelchairs, as the walking space is quite narrow.

Buon appetito!
