Les Canailles: a pioneer of the bring-your-own-wine concept in Hochelaga

Located on Ontario Street since 2011, Les Canailles is one of those pioneering spots in Hochelaga that helped breathe new life into the neighbourhood. It’s an address that doesn’t seek the spotlight but stands out naturally, supported by a loyal clientele. So discreet, in fact, that you could easily walk past without noticing—but all it takes is stepping through the door to understand why regulars have been coming back for nearly 15 years and why it ranks among the best bring-your-own-wine restaurants in town.

Behind the stove is chef Georges Blais, also owner of Dur à Cuire in Longueuil—one of Mayor Catherine Fournier’s favourite tables—who continues to do what he does best: cook straightforward dishes built on pleasure and indulgence.

In the dining room, his longtime colleague Cédric Audet runs the show. The atmosphere speaks for itself: lively tables, laughter echoing, attentive and friendly service. The décor is understated, nothing flashy—simply a true neighbourhood restaurant that does things right, and has been doing so for a long time.

On the plate, the house sticks to well-executed French classics and goes straight to the essentials. A perfectly mastered bistro cuisine: creamy risotto, tartares (the salmon tartare, topped with a spicy mayo and crunchy fennel, is our favourite), duck magret, and mussels and fries just the way we like them. On the board: a côte de bœuf to share, a fish of the day, and a few seasonal dishes depending on the chef’s inspiration.

Les Canailles also offers a few specials, such as a dozen oysters for $15 on Sundays or mussels and fries for $19 with the purchase of an appetizer on Wednesdays. Small gestures that sum up the spirit of the house: generous, accessible, and designed to bring people together. That’s exactly why it naturally appears on our list of affordable menus in Montreal.

We love Les Canailles because it remains true to its DNA. A bring-your-own-wine restaurant that feels like it’s always been part of Hochelaga’s landscape—and without a doubt, will continue to be.
