Open since January 15, 2025, La Scacciata brings an authentically Sicilian touch to Little Burgundy. This Italian café is the brainchild of Jonathan Sarkis, a passionate cook of Sicilian and Lebanese heritage who left behind a 15-year career in property management to devote himself to his love of food.

The idea for La Scacciata came about when his uncle bought the former Mamie Clafoutis space and reached out to him, knowing his passion for cooking and the joy he takes in feeding the people he loves. Jonathan took the reins of the project, renovating everything from top to bottom to create a warm, welcoming space that truly reflects who he is.

The name “Scacciata” refers to the act of pressing or crushing in Sicilian, and describes a bread made from pressed focaccia, typical of the region. True to this tradition, Jonathan and his team bake their bread fresh on site every morning. The texture, both lightly crisp and tender, was a wonderful discovery.

Beyond the bread, everything at La Scacciata is house-made. The sandwiches alone are worth the trip. They’re indulgent and crafted with beautiful, high-quality ingredients. You’ll find Sicilian classics like the bignolati and the scacciata. The one we had the pleasure of trying was stuffed with sausage and rapini. The arancini, crispy and full of flavour, are also on the menu. Those with a sweet tooth will be won over by the many homemade desserts.

“Quality is essential to me. We bring the best of Italy while using as many local products as possible,” Jonathan explains.

The menu will evolve over time with the addition of fresh pasta and other dinner options. La Scacciata also holds a liquor licence, and starting this summer, a terrace will round out the experience. We’re sharing this one because it’s a lovely addition to the neighbourhood, and the food is genuinely excellent.

Happy discovering!
