Opened in 2021 and tucked into the corner of Christophe-Colomb and Saint-Zotique streets, Café des Habitudes is a welcoming space where eco-responsibility guides every aspect of how it runs. More than just a café, it invites you to take on sustainable habits in a warm, inspiring setting. Whether you come to work or study during the day, sketch at the corner of a table, share a moment with your kids or simply catch the sun on the summer terrace, the place is a true haven of calm. Everything here is designed to foster a relaxed, convivial atmosphere, in keeping with the environment and with the café’s values.
A welcoming atmosphere powered by an ethical commitment
From the doorway, Café des Habitudes wraps its visitors in a welcoming atmosphere, where everyone quickly feels at ease, like a regular. That caring spirit is one of the establishment’s great strengths, anchored in a sustainable, community-minded vision.
Its ecological commitment shows in every detail: no disposable cups, a decor made up of 95% second-hand pieces and an entirely vegan offering. Dishes are prepared with local and organic products, following a considered approach where the menu adapts to what the market gardeners bring in. A consistency that encourages mindful eating, even if some visitors may find the choice limited.
A vegan and eco-responsible offering
The matcha and raspberry cookie by Cookine stands out for its unusual texture and its delicate, balanced flavours. The iced matcha latte, refreshing and light, will particularly please those who prefer gentler drinks.
In the kitchen, the fully vegan menu is the work of Saul Topete, who has cooked at Tendresse and Lola Rosa, among others. His creative cooking highlights local and organic products, chosen to the rhythm of the seasons and the deliveries. Café des Habitudes works notably with La Cache Verte, an organic market farm that shares its commitment to more mindful and responsible eating.
The drinks list follows the same philosophy. You’ll find ciders from Cidrerie de Compton, wines from Vignobles William et Gabrielle as well as pét-nats from Château de Cartes. A fine selection that puts Québec know-how in the spotlight and helps make the café a place of discovery.
The coffee is roasted by Pista, while the plant-based drinks come from Dam Drinks and are delivered in 144-litre reusable containers. “Thanks to this solution, we’ve kept more than 30,000 milk cartons out of landfill!” notes Joanna. An initiative that fits naturally into the mission of Café des Habitudes, where responsible consumption holds a central place.
A space with social impact
Café des Habitudes doesn’t stop at its vegan offering: it’s also a real place to meet and to share. Hundreds of events are held there each year, including an open mic night every Sunday, a silent disco on the first Saturday of the month and the Lundis créatifs, devoted to knitting, watercolour and various artistic practices, all in a gathering spirit. Bike repair workshops and various artistic collaborations round out the programming as well.
With its vegan offering and its environmentally respectful practices, Café des Habitudes asserts a strong identity, without ever falling into a preachy tone. The address seeks instead to embody change day to day and to make it accessible through food, culture and neighbourhood life.
The calm atmosphere of Café des Habitudes also makes it a welcoming place for neurodivergent people or anyone sensitive to highly stimulating environments. A space where you can work, take your time or simply give yourself a break in a serene setting, in complete quiet.
The café’s approach reaches beyond the walls of the address, too. As part of the EEQ’s Transition écologique program, Joanna is working to create a full ecosystem meant to give structure to purpose-driven hospitality in Québec. Training, events, mentoring and an eventual certification are among the avenues being considered to bring the sector’s players together and build a community of practice. The goal: to share what Café des Habitudes has learned and help the industry evolve for the long term.
All in all, Café des Habitudes brings together vegan cooking, ecological commitment and community life in a convivial, welcoming place. A sincere address, carried by a clear vision and the desire to make the ecological transition more concrete and more accessible.
Café des Habitudes also appears in our guide to the most beautiful terraces in Montreal and in our selection of eco-friendly restaurants.
P.S. Remember to bring your own cup for drinks to go. Deposit-based reusable containers are also available and can be returned to one of the collection points of La Vague
