After Mile End and Saint-Henri, Pizza Toni is firing up its ovens in Dollard-des-Ormeaux. The New York-style pizzeria, led by Yoni Amir (also behind Falafel Yoni) and his partners Daniel Maislin and Alex Bates, stays true to its formula: a short menu built around quality and speed.
The Arrival the West Island Was Waiting For
The three partners weighed the North Shore and the South Shore before settling on the West Island, listening to customers who had been loudly asking for their pizza closer to home. The first days proved them right: local residents gave the new Pizza Toni team an enthusiastic welcome. The door remains open, however, to crossing the bridges to the North or South Shore when the time comes.
No Need to Change a Winning Formula
The menu is the same as at the other Pizza Toni locations. Order by the slice or as a whole 14- or 18-inch pie, from the cheese, margherita and pepperoni classics to the All Dresss, the Vodka Pep, the S.G.H.P. (pepperoni, spicy honey and garlic), the Pep d’Ail, the Aubergine Parm or the Sweet Cherry Pie. The grandma pies, square and baked in a sheet pan, come in cheese, margherita and vodka versions, among others. Our favourite: the sesame crust. Its toasted seeds recall the Montreal bagel and draw a tasty line between the New York pizza culture that built the house’s reputation and Saint-Viateur Street, where it all began.
A Collaboration Spanning a Quarter Century
Pizza Toni is a story of friendship: the co-founder surrounds himself with two friends he has known for more than 25 years. “I’m exceptionally well surrounded by truly talented people who make what I do possible. I owe them a large share of the credit,” says Yoni Amir. David Dworkind of MRDK designed the space, while Dan Climan handles the visual identity: logos, caricatures and the large wall cutout that sets the tone. That rapport shows in the consistency from one location to the next.
Cookies and Beer to Go With Your Slices
New on the menu, the chocolate chip cookie is a welcome addition for anyone with a sweet tooth. Its recipe was fine-tuned with the same care as the house pizzas.
On the drinks side, Pizza Toni teams up with Espace Public, an east-end Montreal brewery that Falafel Yoni has worked with for years. Three beers are brewed for the house: a sour, an IPA and an Italian pilsner. Other sodas round out the offering for those looking for bubbles without alcohol.
Dine in, take out or delivery: the West Island no longer has to cross the city to enjoy one of the best pizzas in Montreal.
