Melbourne Cafe is a charming establishment inspired by the cafe culture of Melbourne, Australia. On St. Laurent Boulevard just north of Mount Royal Avenue, this small, innocuous-looking space hides good coffee, friendly lunches and original Australian brunches.
In Melbourne, they have a passion for coffee. A real obsession, and we understand! The two friends and owners, Xavier Martinelli and Angus Castran, decided to open a cafe in 2013 that was reminiscent of their hometown and its coffee culture: they wanted to introduce Montrealers to what Melbourne has to offer.
In a neighbourhood where Portuguese culture is very present, Le Melbourne occupies the premises of a small space that doesn’t look like much when you walk by. As soon as you walk through the door, however, you are immediately seduced by the smells that emanate from the kitchen and the coffee being prepared. In a simple decor, the space of about twenty seats offers a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. During the week, you can settle in for a few hours to savour a good coffee and a sandwich – the place is known for its grilled cheese. Recently, the cafe has started offering an Australian brunch on the weekends, which has quickly gained in popularity! On weekends, the place is crowded; the service is slower and you have to wait a few minutes to get a table or be seated at the counter. However, waiting in line for a few minutes to savour one of their plates is definitely worth it. In addition, this address is featured in our guide to Montreal’s most beautiful terraces!
In the kitchen, Chef Saad Fouad Bahbahani is in charge of the menu. On the slate, we find mainly grilled cheese and breakfast sandwiches. A mega favourite is the Michael Hutchence (brioche filled with avocado, bacon, fried egg, salsa, miso mayonnaise, cheddar cheese and sweet potato fries) and the Gotye (smoked ham sandwich with cheddar cheese, Dijon, aioli, bechamel sauce and fried egg). They also offer avocado toast, porridge, granola, ricotta cakes and delicious pastries. The plates are delicious, very pretty, original and fresh.
Melbourne also makes good coffee – a Montreal roasted mix of Brazilian and Ethiopian beans. It can be savoured on the spot, or to take it out.
We love the small cafe for its good food, its coffee, but especially for its originality. We also like it for its friendly and charming team!
