There are places whose names fit them perfectly. Le Bijou, nestled in the heart of Old Québec at the corner of Saint-Jean and Hôtel-de-Ville streets, is one of them. Behind the large windows that open onto two façades of the building, you discover a hushed, intimate space where every detail seems to have been designed with the care usually reserved for precious things.

Open since September 2023 inside the Monsieur Jean hotel, Le Bijou is the creation of Jean Campeau and Geneviève Marcon, together with their children Benjamin and Joséphine Campeau. The story, as told by Meziane Rabia, who oversees operations, has the charm of a fairy tale: Jean Campeau, an interior designer turned real-estate developer, built the hotel that houses the bar entirely in his own image. Every piece of furniture, every tapestry, every detail bears his signature. And Le Bijou? It’s the gift he gave to his muse, Geneviève. You couldn’t invent a better story.

A Campeau creation

The architecture was entrusted to the firm Spatiale, but Jean Campeau himself conceived the design and thought through every element. The visual universe draws inspiration from Magritte — a ceiling fresco is directly inspired by his work — and also borrows from the colors of Alice in Wonderland. The result is a décor that balances dreamlike imagination and elegance without ever feeling excessive. It’s exactly the kind of place where you feel comfortable the moment you step inside, without quite knowing why.

Menus that tell stories

At Le Bijou, the beverage program is at the heart of everything. The cocktail menu was built around a theme as simple as it is powerful: childhood memories. Each member of the team shared a meaningful memory, and the bar translated it into a drink — the taste of nostalgia in a glass.

What truly sets Le Bijou apart is the close relationship between the bar and the kitchen. The cocktails are crafted with ingredients from the kitchen — infusions, reductions, house-made juices — and each one is paired with a perfectly matched bite, automatically served with the drink. It’s not an afterthought; it’s a complete experience.

From the kitchen comes a menu presented on a slate that changes every month, following seasonal ingredients and a new theme each time. You’ll find a mix of refined creations and revisited classics — oysters, caviar, tartares, as well as vegetarian options and indulgent bites — always prepared with carefully selected ingredients. The approach is both convivial and elegant, perfect for nibbling, sharing, and extending the evening over a drink.

Quiet early in the evening, festive after midnight

The atmosphere at Le Bijou evolves as the night unfolds. Early in the evening, it’s the perfect spot for a date: the lights are dim, live jazz (on Thursdays, Tuesdays, and Sundays) fills the room, and guests linger comfortably at their tables. After 10 p.m., the energy shifts. Le Bijou becomes a lively bar among friends, where the night can stretch until 4:30 a.m. This dual personality is one of its greatest charms: one place, two experiences.

Despite being located inside a hotel, it isn’t a family restaurant. A corporate clientele exists, but it mostly gathers in the event space. On a daily basis, Le Bijou attracts people looking for a refined night out without the formality of a fine-dining restaurant — and that is exactly what it delivers.
