Let’s be honest: Montreal is not short on Vietnamese restaurants. But places that truly make you feel like you’ve stepped into a small Saigon street-side canteen — with the clatter of plates hitting the tables and flavors that wake you up instantly? Those are rarer. Tô Dinette Viet does exactly that — and does it well. Behind the project is Vien Cao, also behind Bar Otto, Momiji, Pony BBQ, and formerly An Choi Plaza, along with chef and co-owner Galaxy.

The name says it all. This is a dinette, a real one. No white tablecloths, no servers in aprons, no twelve-course tasting menu. You push open the door and walk into a hyper-colorful space. The furniture recalls those small low red plastic tables found all over Southeast Asia, where people sit on the sidewalk to eat a $2 bowl of soup. It’s an unpretentious setting that makes room for a relaxed, lively atmosphere.

Colorful Vietnamese cuisine

The menu at Tô Dinette Viet isn’t huge, but it covers plenty of ground: grilled dishes, soups, sandwiches, and street food. Everything essential is there — and most importantly, it’s well executed. The flavors are bold and vibrant. As a bonus, the prices are refreshingly gentle (no dish over $25).

The bún bò Huế, the spicy noodle soup originating from the imperial city of Huế in central Vietnam, is particularly successful. The broth is rich and perfectly seasoned, with the depth that comes from lemongrass and chili. It’s comforting and punchy at the same time.

But our real favorite is the Bò Né. If you’re not familiar with the dish, allow us to introduce it. Bò Né — literally “dodging beef” — gets its name from the way diners have to dodge the oil splattering when the sizzling plate lands in front of them. It’s a classic street breakfast in Ho Chi Minh City: a smoking cast-iron platter where lemongrass-marinated beef sizzles alongside a fried egg with crisp edges, served with bread for soaking up every last drop. The dish is a product of French colonial influence in Vietnam — the steak-egg-bread trio reimagined with fragrant marinades and cooked on a hot plate that transforms the experience entirely. At Tô Dinette Viet, it’s one of the house specialties, and it’s easy to see why. Simple, generous, and absolutely delicious.

On the drinks side, you’ll find a few cocktails and a selection of beers — just enough to complement the meal without turning the place into a cocktail bar. The spirit remains the same: no fuss.

Tô Dinette Viet is the kind of spot you keep in your back pocket for nights when you want to eat well without dressing up. A casual dinner with friends on a Tuesday, a solo lunch when you’re craving flavors with personality, or an easygoing outing where no one needs to change after work. The food is good (and affordable), the vibe is fun, and the service is welcoming. A colorful Vietnamese address, and one of a kind in Montreal.
