Lundis au soleil: A Lovely Address with Local Flavours in Villeray

In the heart of Villeray, at the corner of Jarry and Saint-Hubert, Lundis au soleil cultivates the art of taking your time. You stop by at noon for a seasonal plate, you come back in the evening for a bottle of private import, and on weekends you sit down for a brunch worth lingering over, where the pancakes can be paired — why not — with a good glass of wine.

Behind the address are Olivier Martinez, Karina Tétrault and Charles Thibault, three longtime friends who met at Buvette Chez Simone. Together, they opened their little spot in 2020, with the desire to bring a bit of sunshine to the neighbourhood and to offer a place where you can stop in with confidence, at any hour.

The name is a nod to the Spanish film Lunes al sol, translated into French as « Lundis au soleil ».

The lovely decor, for its part, is Olivier’s work: the space lets the light in during the day, then falls into a more festive rhythm once night comes, made for moments of sharing right through to the last glass of wine poured.

The origin of the project traces back to their affection for the old continent. Each of them carrying a particular attachment to Europe, Lundis au soleil takes on the air of the small European café-buvettes you find on nearly every street corner. On the menu, whether at lunchtime or for an apéro-souper, you can settle into generous small plates shaped by the seasons and by the chef’s inventiveness.

In the kitchen, Virginie Picard — formerly of La Récolte and Labo culinaire — has preserved the essence of her predecessor through her generosity and her inventiveness, while keeping prices accessible. Local sourcing remains at the heart of the mission. What Lundis au soleil offers puts the spotlight on nearby market gardeners and farmers.

Built entirely on private import, the wine list, put together by Charles, offers fine bottles from producers who work the vine with the greatest respect, with sensitivity, in step with nature. Oriented toward Europe and Quebec, varied and constantly evolving, it stays reasonably priced throughout. Alongside the wine, the house pours a few cocktails, local beers on rotating lines and a fine non-alcoholic selection, plus coffee and matcha.

True to its name, Lundis au soleil keeps the promise of a ray of warmth in the heart of the neighbourhood, at noon as at night, rain or shine — and as soon as the warm days arrive, its terrasse becomes just the place to let the time slip by.
