L’Iris du Fleuve: The Snack Bar With a Dream View

A little shack that looks like nothing at first, on the edge of the Chemin du Roy in Saint-Sulpice, 30 minutes from Montreal. Honestly, you could drive right past it. Then you spot the line of cars in the parking lot, and it clicks: nobody stops here by accident. L’Iris du Fleuve is the kind of place that turns a dull drive into a stop you’re glad you made.

A Rooftop Terrace Right on the St. Lawrence

The idea is simple: a snack bar, the river, and that’s pretty much it. Behind the humble facade hides a terrace — and above all a rooftop terrace — that looks straight out onto the St. Lawrence. You eat your poutine facing the water, eyes drifting toward the open river. It’s hard to believe you’re just in the suburbs of Montreal; it feels a little like you’ve made it all the way to the Gaspé.

From the Road, You’d Never Guess

That’s the magic of the place. From the road, you don’t suspect a thing; the view is waiting for you on the other side. The river is wide and luminous, and the hum of the suburbs vanishes in an instant. A hot fry in one hand, the breeze off the water full in your face — you quickly understand why the regulars have made L’Iris du Fleuve their little summer ritual.

Poutine, Guédilles and Diner Classics, Done Generously

The menu stays in classic canteen territory, but it’s well executed and generous. The poutines are solid: a good thick brown gravy (and there’s plenty of it) with cheese in spades. The shrimp guédilles are worth it too — a zesty mayo wakes up the tender shrimp tucked into a soft, pillowy roll. The rest is the usual line-up: burgers, hot dogs, corn dogs (pogos), and a daily special that shifts with the team’s mood. As a bonus, there are tasty breakfast sandwiches, too.

Come With the Family, a Date, or a Guédille Craving

You come here with the family on a weekend to make the most of the good weather, as a couple to share a poutine and a gorgeous view, or even solo when a guédille craving hits. Small as it is, the canteen has plenty of seating — tables and chairs on the roof, picnic tables down below — so there’s room for everyone. One thing to note: there’s no indoor seating, so keep an eye on the forecast if you plan to eat on-site.

Nothing complicated, and that’s exactly the charm. Next time you’re driving east, watch for the line of cars in Saint-Sulpice: it’s your cue to slow down, order a poutine, and settle in facing the river.
