If you haven’t yet heard of Tacos Frida, the recent visit by actor Russell Crowe might have piqued your curiosity. While in Montreal, the Gladiator star stopped by this small Saint-Henri restaurant… and left thoroughly impressed.

“The young staff had no idea who he was… They know Bad Bunny, but not Russell Crowe!” laughed Enrique, the owner. Curious, the kitchen staff made their way one by one into the dining room to sneak a look — and the verdict was unanimous: it really was him.

Unaware of their guest’s identity, the front-of-house team delivered the same warm and genuine service they always do — a sincere, down-to-earth hospitality that clearly struck a chord with the actor. But what won him over most was the food: generous, flavourful, and true to Mexican culinary traditions.

Tacos Frida, however, has been delighting food lovers long before Russell Crowe came through the door. Opened in 2015 by Enrique and his mother, the spot was a hit from day one. “We had success from the very beginning,” he tells us proudly.

The name pays tribute to Frida Kahlo, an inspiring figure for Enrique and his family. Her portrait adorns the vibrant, colourful walls of the small dining space, instantly transporting guests to Mexico for the duration of their meal.

The menu often starts with a classic: chips and guacamole. A simple dish, but perfectly executed — and one of Russell Crowe’s personal favourites. Among the standout tacos, the shrimp (camaron) ones are a real treat: grilled shrimp, red cabbage, pico de gallo, cheese, and chipotle mayo — a beautiful balance of acidity, freshness, and heat. But the real star of the show is the birria tacos. Stuffed with slow-braised beef cooked in a spiced broth, melted cheese, then pan-fried and served with a rich consommé for dipping… pure bliss. Another standout is the el flaco taco, featuring cecina (Oaxacan-style beef), guacamole, cheese, and radishes — an elegant and flavourful combo. Every dish is packed with authentic taste, which is exactly why this spot made it onto our list of the best tacos in Montreal.

The ambiance is soft and welcoming. It feels like visiting family. The atmosphere is lively but never loud — Mexican music in the background, laughter, a diverse clientele of local families, regulars, and curious newcomers. It’s part of what makes the place so special: an honest, heartfelt energy carried by a small, smiling, efficient, and friendly team.

Next month, Tacos Frida will celebrate its 10th anniversary — a decade of delicious tacos, heartfelt service, and unwavering passion for Mexican cuisine. And we hope it’s only the beginning!
