March 8, International Women’s Rights Day, held a double significance this year: it marked the grand opening of Royale Ginette, a cozy café-pâtisserie-dinette nestled in the heart of Petite-Patrie. The choice of date was far from random for owners Mathilde and Geneviève—it was a symbolic, heartfelt, and committed nod to women everywhere.

The story of Geneviève and Mathilde began in Quebec City, at Café St-Henri, where they met while working. It’s also where their love story began. After a formative chapter in the capital, they moved to Montreal and launched their first joint venture: Baluchon, a food truck that roamed the roads for five years. A memorable adventure, full of lessons and beautiful memories, it eventually gave way to a desire for stability, gentleness, and a stronger local connection. Royale Ginette is the next chapter—a space designed to be lasting, warm, and community-driven.

Brioche and Beyond

At the heart of their offering: brioche. Soft, generous, and comforting, they’re homemade by Geneviève. The classic cinnamon roll with icing is a must, but every month brings new, creative flavors. When we visited, the caramel cream brioche and the cookie dough one won us over.

The breakfast sandwich also deserves special mention: egg, an English muffin from Boulangerie Automne, melted cheese, and delicious sausage from Cochon Cent Façons butcher shop. Simple, but exceptionally well made.

On the beverage side, Mathilde’s barista expertise shines through. Every drink is crafted with precision and care. In warm weather, don’t miss the fresh thyme lemonade or the Quebec raspberry version—two delicate and refreshing choices. For the curious, a secret menu awaits… We’ll let you in on two favorites: the salted caramel affogato and the iced matcha with local strawberries.

A Place of Warmth and Heart

But Royale Ginette is more than a café—it’s a refuge. A space to gather, unplug, breathe. A place to reconnect, with others or with yourself, far from the noise of the outside world. Inclusiveness, kindness, and a strong sense of community are at the heart of the experience.

The decor, imagined and largely crafted by the duo, reflects their vibrant and welcoming universe. You won’t find traditional chairs here—modular stools invite fluid conversation and conviviality. And as a centerpiece: a striking mural that celebrates feminine strength through warm, vivid tones. Created by artist Alice Demée, the piece perfectly captures the spirit of the café.

This new address charmed us from the very first moment—with its decadent brioche and its soothing, gentle atmosphere. Bon appétit!
