POCHA MTL: Montreal’s Korean Street Food Festival Is Back
From June 11 to 14, POCHA MTL sets up at Bassin Peel for a new edition: four days of street food finds, K-pop performances and open-air festivities by the canal. The largest Korean street market of its kind in the city, it draws more than 25,000 people and celebrates everything that makes South Korean food culture so much fun.
Inspired by pojangmachas, the classic street stalls you’ll find all over South Korea, POCHA recreates the lively, easygoing mood of those bustling carts where you eat well, drink (soju, of course) and settle in for the evening. On the menu: tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), Korean fried chicken, kogos (Korean-style corn dogs), dak-kkochi (chicken skewers) and japchae (Korean glass noodles). Everything street food lovers could hope for.
This year again, restaurants and vendors are answering the call with options for every craving. We’re already won over by the tanghulu (fruit skewers coated in a crackly sugar shell) and the refreshing bubble teas.
We also strongly suggest a stop at Alice & Theo, one of our favourites. This artisanal pastry project puts choux front and centre, with generous cream puffs, indulgent cookies and ice cream. Treats that will please kids and grown-ups alike, and a sweet pause worth building into your visit.
On the programming side, K-pop takes centre stage with concerts and Random Play Dance sessions, where festival-goers can spontaneously join in on the choreography of the moment. The marketplace also lets you browse a selection of Korean products, a way to carry the experience beyond the plate. It’s a lovely chance to soak up the buzz of Korean culture, for one weekend by the canal.
