Since its opening in June 2019, Tonino has become a must-visit for Italian cuisine lovers in Quebec! Located in the former restaurant La Perla, in the Sillery neighborhood, this establishment embodies the unique vision of chef-owner Anthony Travaglini.

Why the name Tonino? “It’s my nickname!” And also a nod to his Italian roots, which perfectly reflects his personal approach to hospitality and his establishment. Born in Italy, Anthony moved to Montreal at the age of 6. His father owned a fine Italian products shop in Montreal, and cooking has always been part of his life. At 25, he decided to move to Quebec City and became the executive chef at Il Teatro, a restaurant in Le Capitole de Québec. A year after his arrival, he decided to open his own restaurant, and success was immediate. “I’ve never been very good with authority, so I’ve always wanted to work for myself,” he says with a laugh.

Tonino represents everything we love about Italy: unmatched hospitality, quality, abundance, romance, and delightful flavors. You enter Tonino and are welcomed as if you’re at home. Anthony even wrote it behind his menus: “You are now sitting in my little home. Everything here will be of quality and has been created as I would like to be welcomed. With candles, a cozy ambiance, like my first love, white tablecloths like at home. The menu is inspired by my travels and experiences. If you’re in good company and in a decent mood, everything should go well!” It’s authentic, charming, and real.

The décor at Tonino is quite chic, and the ambiance is cozy. Anthony himself designed the space a few years ago. “I loved the space with its woodwork, mirrors, New York-style, a bit mafioso! (laughs),” he says. This comfortable setting is perfect for a romantic evening or a meal with friends. The restaurant’s service is a major highlight; the team provides professional, warm, and attentive hospitality. The tables are lively, and the guests are in high spirits.

When it comes to the menu, Tonino stands out with its generous and flavorful Italian cuisine, inspired by Anthony’s travels and personal experiences. The chef ensures that the menu evolves with the seasons, while keeping some signature dishes that have made the establishment famous. Among the must-tries are the carpaccio with red wine sorbet (incredible!), sweetbreads (delicious!), prime rib, and the famous pasta served in a parmesan wheel. “These are dishes that stand the test of time and always please,” the chef notes. All the pasta is homemade, the portions are generous, and everything has been unanimously praised.

The wine list is curated by sommelier Louis Lorthois. It features a selection of 120 to 150 wines, 90% of which are private imports, mainly from Italy. The house also offers signature and classic cocktails that are very well-crafted.

What makes Tonino a unique destination is the attention to detail and Anthony’s passion for cooking and hospitality. “What I love most is the atmosphere,” he says. “I sit at the end of the room and watch customers enjoying their time. Seeing that it works is the greatest success.” This genuine care for the well-being of his guests, combined with his love for Italian cuisine and hosting, makes Tonino a must-visit restaurant in Quebec. People come to Tonino for a delicious Italian dinner with generous portions and a vibrant ambiance!

For a more casual experience, Anthony also recommends Tonino Pizza Gastronomica, his pizzeria located just a few steps away.
