Of course we go to a restaurant to eat, and to eat well if we can, but never only for that. All sorts of things shape whether a given table feels like a good place to be. Les Mômes, the bring-your-own-wine spot in Villeray, has plenty of the qualities that push a place to the top of the list.
The warm welcome at Les Mômes
On the phone, the voice is welcoming, the details are clear, and you already sense a good evening ahead. These “Mômes” are the creation of Marie Voyer and Yoann Van Den Berg, a couple in life and at work. “Opening our own restaurant has been a dream for a long time, and Les Mômes really represents us. It’s unpretentious, just like home, and we take real pleasure in hosting.” She was once the youngest member of Les Clefs d’Or, the international concierge society, at 22; he’s a chef whose cooking you may already have tasted at Le Fantôme and Pastel. He came from the Basque Country and passed, among other formative kitchens, through that of Anne-Sophie Pic, and today he brings his flavour-driven cooking to hungry guests from all over.
Plates that genuinely impress
The plates from chef Van Den Berg are exactly what you want set down in front of you: beautifully composed, built on produce of remarkable freshness, with bright pairings and real care so that every stage of the meal is as good to look at as it is to eat. Take the cheerfully crunchy shrimp dressed in a savoury sauce, the memorable cod fillet, or the polenta gnocchi so delicate they nearly bring on a happy tear. When dessert arrives, if you feel like dreaming of Cuba — or simply discovering a small sweet bombshell — go for the ¡Baba Libre!, a playful riff on the rum baba.
Simplicity, done right
The decor is simple, the service is attentive — Marie surrounds guests with a touching thoughtfulness — and her husband comes to the tables with his creations, sharing the details that help you taste and appreciate them fully. From the moment it opened in the fall of 2022, the room won people over with its thundering good cooking. The address is part of our list of the best BYOB restaurants in Montreal.
And a place that announces itself with a slogan like “Ils vécurent enfants et firent beaucoup d’heureux” — a wink at the French fairy-tale ending, roughly “they stayed kids and made many people happy” — really makes you want to push the door open. You won’t be let down, and you may well find yourself coming back often to treat yourself and cheer these mômes on.
In 2025, chef Yoann Van Den Berg was crowned the grand winner of the 14th season of the TV show Les Chefs!, and in 2026 the restaurant earned a recommendation in the Michelin Guide. The menu also puts Québec products and local producers front and centre, as part of the Aliments du Québec au menu program.
Happy discovering!
