Gourmet Tours of Excellent Italian Cuisine in Montreal

Update 14 November 2019   |    Published on 14 November 2019

Gourmet Tours of Italian Cuisine in Montreal’s Little Italy  – The TASTET x Montréal en Lumière Gourmet Tours are back, and just in time for the impending holiday season! With the help of your feedback from 2019, the TASTET team has prepared six new and exciting themes for this year’s tours. This time around, you are invited to discover the worlds of saké, “real wine”, hidden bars, Greek cuisine, Chinese cuisine, and Italian cuisine in Montreal.

Following the success of our Italian themed Gourmet Tours of last year, we knew that we needed to bring the theme back for 2020. This time around, we are taking things a step further by offering a tour of the most excellent Italian cuisine in the city, guided by Jean-Philippe Tastet, a renowned food critic with over 25 years of experience in the industry.

The influx of Italian immigration to North America in the 19th century certainly left its mark on the Montreal culinary landscape, and we are forever grateful. Indeed, this city is chock full of amazing trattorias, pizzerias and bistros, all serving a cuisine based around the foundations of Italian gastronomy :  freshness, simplicity and high quality products. Perfect for those of you with a weakness for pizzas, pastas and cannolis, we have prepared an exciting Italian tour that will introduce you to the best Italian addresses in Montreal’s Little Italy neighbourhood.

On this tour, you will discover five of our favourite Italian addresses in Little Italy. You will learn about Italian cuisine and the addresses that we’ll visit, taste the specialities of every spot on the tour, and get a chance to engage with the staff.

Fruiterie Milano

6862 Boul St-Laurent, Montréal, Montreal, QC H2S 3C7, Canada

A true institution of Little Italy, Milano has been around since 1954! It is said Milano was one of the first spots in the city where you could buy authentic Italian products and ingredients. Over half a century later, this grocery store is still at the heart of Montreal’s Italian community. Cafe San Gennaro

69 Rue Saint Zotique Est

Opened in 2015, Café San Gennaro is one of our favourite Italian cafés in town! In an elegant setting, the address offers Italian coffee, lunchtime meals (including several pizzas al taglio) and a few specialty products in their delicatessen section. Upon walking in, you will instantly notice that this café is inspired by the style of cafés that dot the streets of Rome and Naples – a very beautiful address where Italian tradition is at the forefront of their business.

They're open! They're open! restaurant-impasto-petite-italie-4

Impasto

48 Rue Dante, Montreal, QC, Canada

For the Saturday tours – This restaurant was the first venture of renown chefs Stefano Faita and Michele Forgione, and thanks to its superb Italian cuisine, is one of our favourite restaurants in town. The menu offers delicious Italian classics that are executed with precision and finesse. At Impasto, everything is homemade using only the best seasonal products available… you could say that their menu is the perfect amalgamation of Italian and Quebecois flavours! Each time you visit, you’ll be surprised by how this address just seems to get better and better.

They're open! They're open! Bottega pizzeria Laval restaurant

Bottega Pizzeria

65 rue St Zotique Est

For the Sunday tour – Bottega serves the best Neapolitan pizza in town, hands down. The margarita alone makes this place worth a visit! Everything here is homemade, from the pizza dough and tomato sauce to the delicious gelatos. Much like in most of Italy, a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere perfectly coexists with a chic and refined décor. Bottega Pizzeria is an ideal spot for all occasions!

They're open! They're open! Pizzeria Gema restaurant Montreal

Pizzeria Gema

6827 Rue Saint-Dominique, Montréal, QC, Canada

Following the success of Impasto, chefs Stefano Faita and Michele Forgione opened their second restaurant, Pizzeria Gema. Located in the space adjacent to Impasto, Gema offers an amazing pizza menu that includes some classics as well as a few more adventurous creations. The house makes just about everything that goes onto their pizzas, including the pepperoni, ham and prosciutto.  A testament to just how good this address is, Gema’s Hawaiian pizza manages to sway even the strongest of “pineapple on pizza protesters”.

They're open! They're open! alati-caserta-patisserie-italienne-montreal

Alati-Caserta

277 Rue Dante, Montréal, QC H2S 1K3, Canada

Opened in 1968, this traditional Italian pasticceria should be at the top of your list if you’re in search of the best cannolis in Montreal. Whether it is full-sized or bite-sized, this Sicilian dessert is the house’s speciality. Alati-Caserta is so famous for their cannolis that restaurants like Pizzeria Napoletana offers them on their menu. We highly recommend visiting this pasticceria on a Saturday, because thats when they make cannolis of all different flavours,  such as pistachio, limoncello, tiramisu and custard.
