Alexandraplatz is a unique bar, which offers a relaxed space where you can have a good drink in the Marconi-Alexandra district, right next to the Mile-Ex!
Its name is a nod to the famous square “Alexanderplatz” in East Berlin, one of the few places where public gatherings were allowed during the era of divided Germany. Here in Montreal, the Alexandraplatz bar welcomes you to a place inspired by the German “Biergarten”. The bar is the result of the imagination of Penny Pattison and Bernadette Houde, the owners of “Le Pick-up” convenience store.
Ever since June 2012, Alexandraplatz has been opening its doors to the warmer weather between the months of June and October, offering a clean, trendy and bohemian space for a drink. It is basically a garage that has been converted into a bar. Inside, there is a large counter, long picnic tables and small lights on the ceiling. Everything is simple, warm and allows you to enjoy the essential of enjoying a drink with friends or alone but the picnic tables are ideal for meeting new people. Every day on the outdoor terrace there’s a small BBQ going on. You can enjoy tacos, a vegetarian hot dog, nachos or other small snacks to accompany your drink. Bites are offered at $3-$8.
At Alexandraplatz, check out the cocktails such as La Bicicletta, Bourbon Lemonade, Dark & Stormy, Ginger Lime Saké or Paloma. Cocktails are between $9 and $11. There are also classic tequilas, scotch, cognac, etc. and some soft drinks (ie. soda, juice, non-alcoholic beer). The bar is also known for its beers from the Old Montreal Brewery; in the selection from microbrewers, look for Dunham, Le Castor, Les Trois Mousquetaires, Ghost Farm, and more. Alexandraplatz also offers ciders from Milton Cider Factory. Prices range from $3-$4 per glass to $6-$8 per pint. As far as the wines are concerned, there is always a selection of bottles from small-scale vintners who work intelligently with their product : white, red and rosé. Prices usually range from $30 to $55 per bottle.
As for the ambience, there is lively music and sometimes a DJ. We come here to relax, not to be in a hurry, thanks to Alexandraplatz’s charm, decent prices and very relaxed atmosphere.
“I love the sunsets here,” says Penny. We believe that Alexandraplatz is one of Montreal’s most unusual bars and it ranks as one of our favourite places in the city. Maybe the fact that we can only enjoy the space during the summer makes the bar more special, so enjoy it while the weather’s good!
